A Puzzle of Parks for the Andarax River Plain in Almería
The Andarax River Park is conceived as a sequence of interconnected parks. Piece by piece, they come together to form a singular entity that, like a puzzle, gathers fragments of the essence of each place it traverses. Each segment contributes its own identity, collectively revealing a characteristic agrarian landscape that functions simultaneously as a space for leisure and recreation and as a productive environment. The park extends across nine municipalities with markedly different geographies and urban development pressures, ranging from the steep slopes of Santa Fe de Mondújar to the gentle plains of the Almería delta at the river’s mouth, reaching the sea. These diverse topographies shape the linear park as a green corridor marked by strong contrasts.
As part of the implementation of the Territorial Planning Plan for the Urban Agglomeration of Almería (POTAUA), a Special Plan was prepared to define this new metropolitan park structured around the lower valley of the Andarax River. The river’s structuring role is reinforced through the introduction of new public uses along its course and adjacent spaces, linked to its fluvial nature and to the maintenance, recovery and reintroduction of traditional agricultural activity.
The park is organised through a mobility system structured around a north–south longitudinal axis, complemented by transverse connections that ensure continuity along the route and bring citizens closer to all the significant places and landmarks within the area. Rest areas are recovered, viewpoints are created to frame the diverse landscapes that make up the territory, and existing cultural heritage is integrated. The system of public parks interweaves with agricultural land, shaping a “park-museum” that encapsulates the hydraulic and agricultural history of the river and its fertile plain.

Planur-e: www.planur-e.es es una revista digital editada en España en materias de territorio, urbanismo, sostenibilidad, paisaje y diseño urbano. Nació con el objetivo de exponer buenas prácticas dando voz a los profesionales, planteando que sean los propios autores de los trabajos quienes los presenten. Se colabora así a su difusión, al tiempo que se ofrece, a aquellos que se aproximan al proyecto, la oportunidad de ver otras formas de trabajar y contrastar sus propias reflexiones y propuestas. Planur-e por sus características pretende llenar un hueco, dada la escasez de publicaciones en estas materias. Alcanza en este momento su número diez, con un planteamiento monográfico y da, al tiempo, en su Miscelánea cabida a múltiples temas. Cuenta ya con un número importante artículos alrededor de 150, hasta el momento, y con autores de muy distintos países, lo que enriquece su tarea de divulgación.
