Urban redevelopment of Pau Historical Centre (Sardinia, Italy)
The historical centers of Marmilla area, as in most of the rural villages of Sardinia and the Mediterranean, are characterized by the presence of a compact urban fabric and the narrow and winding streets. Widenings within the urban area are almost non-existent, the few present often derive from the collapse or demolition of one or more buildings.
The redevelopment of Pau historical centre has allowed us to investigate the delicate theme of the relationship between traffic and urban historical context. The study of cartography was fundamental in understanding the urban processes that led to the current streets conformation, it was in fact possible to see how the widening in the upper part of Via Regina Elena derives from the demolition of an old house. The recovery project has taken this aspect into account by designing a pavement that resembles the previous street layout. The spaces not strictly necessary for vehicular mobility, paved in a different way, were intended for parking and partly for pedestrian areas with the addition of a long seat, a fountain and the planting of a tree.
The analysis of the context and of the evolution of the urban fabric over time is the basis for a design capable of enhancing the places by telling their history and the vicissitudes, transforming the experience of transit into a source of learning.
