Improvement of the Beachfront Edge in Porto do Son (A Coruña)
Since the 1980s, the construction of a new boundary within the port environment of Porto do Son led to the creation of reclaimed land to accommodate an urban park and to consolidate Playa do Cruceiro as a sandy beach. The intervention consisted of a medium-height concrete wall which, together with an asphalt track on its rear side, established a clear and forceful separation between the park and what is now the town’s beach. The dynamics of subsequent port works, along with current climatic conditions, have contributed to the uncontrolled evolution and expansion of the ??????, overtopping the boundary and colonising the park.
The project and its execution propose urban regeneration by incorporating an open process of re-naturalisation of the constructed edge and new accessibility to the beach. The intervention, covering approximately 4,000 m² with an average width of 40 metres, also addresses the treatment of the points of contact with the adjacent urban space, recently upgraded. Alongside the removal of the promenade and the demolition of the retaining wall separating it from the urban park, the main intervention consisted of the implementation of a controlled dune system with native vegetation, as well as the construction of three perpendicular timber walkways that organise the different routes arriving from the town centre. The project is aimed at the environmental recovery of a seafront edge, where architecture balances public spaces with very different degrees of urbanity, advocating respect for a coastal environment in constant evolution.

Planur-e: www.planur-e.es es una revista digital editada en España en materias de territorio, urbanismo, sostenibilidad, paisaje y diseño urbano. Alcanza en este momento su número diez, con un planteamiento monográfico y da, al tiempo, en su Miscelánea cabida a múltiples temas. Cuenta ya con un número importante artículos alrededor de 150, hasta el momento, y con autores de muy distintos países, lo que enriquece su tarea de divulgación.
