The refurbishment of Sant Jaume neighbourhood, in the historical centre of Tortosa
The refurbishment of Sant Jaume neighbourhood is part of a bigger strategy which is enclosed in the redaction of Tortosa Urban Development Plan, and it’s the continuation of the actions already started in the historical centre by the comprehensive intervention plan of the historical centre (Plan de Intervención Integral del Casco Antiguo - PINCAT).
The strategy rises from the conclusions of the analysis and urban diagnostic, with two major lines of action:
1) To refurbish and articulate a new urbanity, in those places more inaccessible, where there is concentrated a greater degree of urban, architectural and social deficits, and where only the public action can guarantee a comprehensive refurbishment of the neighbourhood, with new architectures, new residents, new public spaces and a new configuration respectful to the heritage values of the historical centre in general, and specially Sant Jaume neighbourhood . This action will consist on the creation of a new street which will be called carrer del Mig, and which allows condensing in its execution three basic principles: urban connectivity comfortable habitability and heritage integration.
2) To conserve and rehabilitate the majority of the existing building and urban fabric in those plots where is possible the rehabilitation and where the private action facilitates this strategy as the most advisable for the maintenance of the heritage, social and economic values of the historical centre of Tortosa, because of the employment levels and the conservation level of buildings.
