The masterplan of the surroundings of the international station of Canfranc (Huesca)
We aim to formulate these new urban planning tools for the environment of the Canfranc International Station with utmost respect for history and the unique significance of the territorial scope they will involve.
Restoring the original railway functionality to achieve the desired revitalization of the line and the recovery of its “internationality” requires a broad re-dimensioning, that will involve the disaffection of two thirds of the area -comprising most of the existing buildings- from railway use.
The goal is to make the present and future railway function compatible with the preservation of the physical structure of the station complex, and the preservation of its associated inalienable cultural heritage. This necessitates the implementation of new uses that can contribute to the recovery of the space’s life and use, and the preservation of its recognition and the dignity it deserves.
The objective is to enable the rehabilitation of an urban space, artificial in its origin, but nowadays almost one hundred years later, fully integrated as a natural part of the landscape that frames it. This rehabilitation must include the regeneration of existing buildings and their adaptation to new uses to guarantee citizen activity in redeveloped living spaces.
