The Czerniakowski Mound
An Evolving Landscape in Warsaw’s Urban Fabric
The Warsaw Uprising Mound is an artificial hill made from the rubble of Warsaw, which was destroyed during World War II. It is a place that has been reclaimed three times – in symbolic, material, and natural aspects.
In 1994, the veterans of the Warsaw Uprising noticed the significant potential of the hill and led to the erection of a monument on its top. Their modest, grassroots initiative was an expression of freedom of speech after the fall of communism, but also an act of "symbolic recycling," transforming an abandoned landfill into an important venue.
Despite this, for the next three decades, the area was considered inaccessible and dangerous. It is a brownfield reclaimed by Fourth Nature. Therefore, the starting point for our project in 2019 was the observation of natural processes initiated by pioneering and invasive species, followed by further shaping of these processes to enhance biodiversity. This leads to a shift in the paradigm of urban nature aesthetics, favoring the exposure of its authenticity, often perceived as "ugly." Thanks to phytosociology, we are able to observe changes in the mound's ecosystem, reconstruct its "natural history," and predict its future.
We speak of the third reclamation in the context of the materiality of the mound, which until now has been absent from public awareness. Rubble was a valuable resource during the reconstruction of Warsaw. Eighty years later, we are recreating that technology. The rubble-concrete structures resemble formations created by natural forces, but in fact, they record the manual labor of a team of workers. This Warsaw urbanite, an anthropogenic rock, will eventually be absorbed by nature; it will be covered with vegetation.

Planur-e: www.planur-e.es es una revista digital editada en España en materias de territorio, urbanismo, sostenibilidad, paisaje y diseño urbano. Nació con el objetivo de exponer buenas prácticas dando voz a los profesionales, planteando que sean los propios autores de los trabajos quienes los presenten. Planur-e por sus características pretende llenar un hueco, dada la escasez de publicaciones en estas materias. Alcanza en este momento su número diez, con un planteamiento monográfico y da, al tiempo, en su Miscelánea cabida a múltiples temas. Cuenta ya con un número importante artículos alrededor de 150, hasta el momento, y con autores de muy distintos países, lo que enriquece su tarea de divulgación.
