The Old City of Taranto, from degradation to revitalization
Spaces and architecture along the structuring urban axis.
The Old City of Taranto is a singular case, a place where the specifics of a historic centre where history, culture and tradition has defined a unique artefact with environmental, morphological and architectural characteristics, have been overlapped by isolation and abandonment , bringing a heritage with inestimable wealth to consume under the effects of an unstoppable degradation. In a complete state of ruin, today it is populated by a few inhabitants, often occupying insecure homes that are at risk of collapse.
The ineffectiveness of the recovery actions carried out leads to the necessary reversal of the situation, looking at recovery not in terms of conservation and museification, but in a more dynamic way; Not through ineffective interventions but through organic ones; Not pursuing monofunctional solutions which are cause of "social peripherality" but combining different scenarios, cultural, social and economic, aiming at the requalification and promotion of the site.
In design terms, the action starts from the design of open spaces to practicing sutures that reconnect an urban fabric reduced to shreds, and then to involve building fabrics by activating a process of regeneration and comprehensive revitalization. The goal to reach is the urban recovery, restoring the original function that public space have in a historical centre in the construction of sense and identity, whose strength consists of prefiguring, following, strong and invisible connections, not necessarily in a hierarchical way, knowing how to tell about the city through an articulated urban fabric, knowing how to qualify for a variety of possible uses, guaranteeing dialogue and exchange between them.

Planur-e: www.planur-e.es es una revista digital editada en España en materias de territorio, urbanismo, sostenibilidad, paisaje y diseño urbano. Cuenta ya con un número importante artículos alrededor de 150, hasta el momento, y con autores de muy distintos países, lo que enriquece su tarea de divulgación.
