BioParque Living Museum
Architecture, city and landscape
BioParque Living Museum is a project that was born within the framework of a Public Competition with the objective of designing the final section of the Urban and Environmental Corridor of the Cali River, which begins from Calle 25 to the mouth of the Cauca River. This initiative results from the interest of the municipal environmental authorities to protect the ecosystem of the corridor and consolidate it as a natural space for the enjoyment of citizens.
The city of Cali is located between the foothills of the Farallones National Natural Park - rock formations with a height of 4,100 meters above sea level that are part of the Western Cordillera - and the Cauca River that borders the city on its eastern side. Six rivers descend from it (Cali, Aguacatal, Pichindé, Cañaveralejo, Meléndez, Lili and Pance) that cross the city until they end their journey on the Cauca River, giving Cali the pseudonym: “The city of the seven rivers”. Despite its scenic value and the environmental advantages of having a body of water in such a dense urban environment, the Cali River has been affected in multiple ways over time, fostering dynamics of urban segregation, unlinking and deteriorating the Biotic channels linked to the river and its tributaries, forcing the disappearance and migration of species, turning the river into a channel that receives contamination. Therefore, although the project intervention corresponds only to a section of the Cali River, an urban-scale strategy is proposed under 3 fundamental principles, recover, connect and integrate, to rebuild the ecological-urban network between the hills and the river, environmental restructuring, eco-systemic connectivity, conservation, sustainable use of biodiversity and water recovery through BioParque Living Museum. Resulting in a project that associates environmental recovery with the improvement of social conditions, to build not only a sustainable city, but also a sustainable and creative attitude that generates positive transformations in the Colombian urban and territorial context, which can be extrapolate in other contexts with similar conditions.
