Casco Vello Vigo Rehabilitation
The recovery process that today is experiencing the old town of Vigo is irreversible and their results are becoming apparent. Degradation, abandonment, depopulation and marginality that characterized it for decades now give way to the well deserved recovery of this area.
The population of the historic center was in full swing in the first half of the last century, but gradually, this trend began to change. The last decades of the twentieth century were disastrous for the survival of the historic center of Vigo. The population began to fall rapidly, leaving empty buildings and in a process of gradual degradation, where socially excluded groups found a central place to live.
This marginal situation became more visible at the top of the old neighbourhood embracing the whole of the iconic streets of Forge, San Sebastián, Rise ao Castelo and Menéndez Abeleira. It is precisely in this area where property deterioration was more clear.
These two clearly distinct areas of the historical center also include the geographical barrier of Elduayen street.
The historical center of Vigo had to wait for the XXI century to plunge into an irreversible process of recovery and rehabilitation, with Public Administrations joining forces, in order to return to Vigo´s people, a historic centre to be proud. Vigo recovers not only its identity, but also increases tourism and offers an alternative lifestyle for new residents.
